__Bellwork__

"Please take out your math binder, dividers, and a pen. Get a divider from the bottom shelf of the bookshelf by the door. Turn in forms to the homework tray."

__Lesson__(Pretest/Binders/Information Cards/Getting Acquainted Task Cards)

1. Students will finish the math vocabulary pretest.

2. Students will set up their math binder with dividers with step-by-step directions from the teacher. Tabs will be labeled: class information, bellwork, notes & tools, vocabulary, homework, other. Students will set up their assessment folders.

3. Students will complete student information index cards with step-by-step directions from the teacher.

4. Students will finish the "Getting Acquainted Task Card" activity.

5. The teacher will distribute XtraMath information and show students how to use the website. Students will write the teacher's email address, their username and password for XtraMath in the front of their planners.

Students will complete a journal entry: "Describe 2-3 methods/strategies/activities that have helped you to learn new vocabulary words in a class in the past."

Log into XtraMath. Complete one lesson.

__Other__

The teacher will show class jobs list to students and ask volunteers to fill each position.

__Bellwork__

"In your journal, tell me how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich."

__Materials__

bread, butter knife, jelly, peanut butter

__Lesson__(Order of Operations)

1. The teacher will generate interest in the lesson by asking a student or students to read the directions they wrote aloud while she follows them.

2. The teacher will ask "What can happen when we do not follow directions, or the directions that we are given are unclear?"

3. The teacher will share the main idea of the lesson: In math, we have order of operations to tell us how to complete a problem, so that we get the right answer. Order of operations in math is like punctuation in writing. The placement of punctuation in writing changes the message sent even when the words are the same. Order of operations changes the result we get in math even if the numbers are exactly the same.

4. Journal entry: order of operations mnemonic and sample problems

5. Guided practice using SmartBoard and math journals

6. Independent practice using dry erase boards and markers

Students will complete an exit ticket: PEMDAS.

Students will complete 2 order of operations problems in their journals.

Students will turn in homework to the homework tray.

__Lesson__(Order of Operations Ninja Task Cards)

2. Students will participate in a math stations activity circulating around the room completing order of operations task cards. The teacher will meet with individual students and small groups to go over the homework and provide additional guided practice. Students will self-check completed task cards answer sheets against the teacher key after showing the teacher their completed sheets.

Students will have 5 minutes to complete an exit ticket with 3 order of operations problems. Students will be given 2 minutes to discuss the problems with a peer before turning in their exit tickets.
